On the edge of Lerwick, Clickimin Broch makes a great introduction to these unique northern towers. It is in the care of Historic Scotland, who also look after Fort Charlotte in the town. Another historic building is the Bod of Gremista. Because of its low traffic density, Shetland is of interest to cyclists and the islands are on the North Sea Cycle Trail. The open landscapes and impressive coastline mean there is plenty of choice for walkers in Shetland. Anglers can enjoy brown trout sport in more than lochs in the islands. Kayaking and diving are also popular watersports here. Species that excite comment further south on mainland Scotland — for example, great and Arctic skuas – are relatively commonplace in these wild northlands!

Map Dumfries and Galloway Dumfries and Galloway has lots of unspoilt countryside and can be found in the south-west corner of Scotland. An interesting detail is that the Mull of Galloway, in the south-western tip, lies further south than Newcastle in the UK. Dumfries and Galloway is also well-known for its many artists and writers. On the west bank there are several walks and cycle routes in Mabie Forest and Sweetheart Abbey in the village of New Abbey.
Criffel metres offers the hill walker a reasonably modest walk with excellent views across the Solway to the Lake District. There are several attractive coastal villages within this area — Auchencairn, Kippford, Colvend, Rockcliffe, and Portling. There is also a unique round tower at Orchardton and the islands of Hestan Isle and Rough Island can be reached at low tide outside the breeding season for birds. Mersehead is an excellent wildfowl reserve.
The area is well provided with coastal paths. The area also includes the town of Gatehouse of Fleet and the historic villages of Anworth and Girthon — there is a castle at Cardoness in the care of Historic Scotland. There are pleasant hills to walk in around Cairnharrow and Kenlum and Castramon Wood at the north end of the area is a joy particularly with the bluebells in spring.
Today it is the biggest town in south west Scotland, the administrative centre for Dumfries and Galloway, and the focus of a large rural hinterland. Burns spent the last years of his life in Dumfries, dying here in

For the quarter ending 30 September , sales are up by 31 per cent and property viewings are up by 17 per cent compared to the preceding quarter. We are on course to have our busiest year ever for sales from the Castle Douglas office. We are seeing a return to healthy levels of interest in property across the board, with a reduction in the time taken to sell, on average, as long as the property is realistically priced.
For the most attractive properties, there is often a good degree of interest from competing buyers and in many cases a closing date is imposed.
